Maintaining the safety and well being of children is everyone’s responsibility. Care and concern should not be limited to the playground, the classroom or the family room. It needs to expand to the chatrooms and social networking sites that populate the Internet. Education is the key to understanding and ultimately preventing the exploitation of children online.
The U.S. Department of Justice and the Office of Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention, has partnered with INOBTR(“I Know Better”), iKeepSafe and the Hispanic Communications Network to launch a national Project Safe Childhood Internet awareness campaign targeting parents AND potential online predators in an effort to inform and engage them in the call to action to protect children from online exploitation. This extensive initiative will include a PSA campaign outreach program via national cable television, radio and online advertisements as well as partnerships with movie theaters, special events and on designated websites. In addition to the media campaign, a comprehensive employee education initiative will be launched in partnership with U.S. Attorneys around the country to engage their districts’ top 100 employers in the fight to keep kids safe online. This education initiative will allow business leaders to give their employees an internal resource to keep up to date on Internet Safety.
Supplementing this nationwide initiative will be the implementation of Internet safety events and programs on a local and regional level, organized by Project Safe Childhood coordinators and Department of Justice sanctioned organizations.
